Armitstead riding high

Lizzie Armitstead continued the British domination at the UCI World Cup in Manchester on Saturday by qualifying top in the women's points race.

The 20-year old finished with 25 points with Switzerland's Andrea Wolfer two points back in second and Hong Kong's Wan Yiu Jamie Wong on 22 points in third.

The Otley-born rider has enjoyed a breakthrough season on the track in 2009, claiming three medals at the World Track Cycling Championships in March including points race bronze.

And Armitstead will be favourite to add to her growing collection of international medals in tonight's final.

Meanwhile, Olympic keirin silver medallist Ross Edgar won the fifth-eighth place sprint race in Manchester after missing out on a place in the semi finals.

The Team Sky+ HD rider powered ahead of the field and held off a late challenge from Poland's Damian Zielinski to win in 10.528 seconds.
