With one minute remaining the Briton clocked a 2:09.711 making him the only man to break the 2:10.00 barrier so far this weekend.
Augusto Farfus was second best (2:10.354) followed by Huff's team-mate Alain Menu (2:10.397).
The session was red flagged with 12 minutes remaining after a collision between BMW Team Italy-Spain's Alessandro Zanardi and Sergio Hernandez.
Zanardi crashed into the tyres at turn 16 and while Farfus narrowly avoided him, Hernandez was not so lucky and drove into the rear of his team-mate's car. Both retired to the pits.
Fellow BMW driver Andy Priaulx set the seventh best time overall. He was bettered by a trio of SEATs made up of Gabriele Tarquini, Rickard Rydell and Tiago Monteiro.
The final Chevrolet driver, Nicola Larini, completed the top eight.
Tom Coronel and Stefano D'Aste continued their battle to be the quickest independent with the former taking it in this session.
He claimed 12th place overall but his time of 2:11.931 was a mere 0.056 of a second better than D'Aste's.
Turn 15 was a hotspot for mistakes as Joerg Mueller, Jaap van Lagen, Gabriele Tarquini and D'Aste all missed their braking point and went straight. Felix Porteiro made the same mistake at turn 16 and Kristian Poulsen stopped on the track after turn 11.
