Zenit and Monaco remain unbeaten in Group C after playing out a turgid 0-0 draw at the Petrovski Stadium.
Neither side had too many chances and neither team looked too displeased with the point having won on the opening night with Zenit downing Benfica 2-0 away and Monaco completing a 1-0 win over Bayer Levekusn.
Salomon Rondon probably had the best opportunity for the home side when he met a Hulk cutback on 50 minutes, but he lost his balance at the key moment with Danijel Subasic collecting calmly seconds later.
Monaco could have scored in the opening four minutes when Juri Lodygin denied Dimitar Berbatov a certain goal as he blocked his shot from five yards after Lucas Ocampos had played provider.
Zenit next have a double header with Bayer Leverkusen while Monaco host Benfica on October 22. Both sides will be confident of progress, but neither side are likely to challenge for the trophy.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Ricardo Carvalho (Monaco): A solid performance at the back from the Portuguese defender as he ensured his side wouldn't be departing Russia without at least a point.
KEY STATS
Monaco captain Jérémy Toulalan had a passing accuracy of 83% tonight. He completed 40 of 48 attempted passes in an impressive display in midfield alongside Geoffrey Kondogbia.
Last season's Ligue 1 runners-up claim a point against the Russian side. The French side now have four points after their return to the UEFA Champions League European.
Zenit maintain their outstanding home record in European competition, winning 30 of 49 games.
