Frank Lampard came off the bench to score a dramatic equaliser for 10-man Manchester City against his former club Chelsea in a fiery 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
The veteran midfielder, who made a surprise loan switch to Manchester after leaving Chelsea for New York City FC, looked dazed as his team-mates celebrated his late volley which ended the Blues’ perfect start in the league.
City shaded a tempestuous opening period that yielded six yellow cards but few clear-cut chances as both sides struggled to involve their frontmen.
It appeared the match would peter out into a drab, goalless draw after the restart, but Pablo Zabaleta’s dismissal for a second yellow card spurred Chelsea forward.
Substitute Andre Schuerrle’s close-range finish sparked a riveting finale which saw Lampard equalise before the former England midfielder had another late effort blocked.
Despite denying Chelsea victory, Lampard was warmly applauded off the pitch by the visiting supporters who also sang his name throughout his second-half cameo.
