But when the dust settled and the final votes were tallied, the winner was Dimitar Berbatov, whose brilliant piece of skill broke the deadlock against Blackburn at Old Trafford. Even controlling Patrice Evra's powerful ball in to the box seemed unlikely enough; but to flip it up, spin himself around in mid air and despatch a ruthless volley to the bottom left corner was quite sublime.
But as great as that goal was, the result seems a little harsh on Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas, whose solo effort from the half-way line left literally saw him escape literally half of the Tottenham side and leave Harry Redknapp's side scratching their heads. The Spanish wizard picked the ball up from a deflection just inside the Spurs half before his mixture of fizzing acceleration, perfect balance and deft control got him in position to smash the ball into the net.
Didier Drogba's side-footed effort to drive the nail in Bolton's coffin turned up in third place, but if the striker's finish had been even half as attractive as the wonderful ball-juggling in the build-up then Dimitar and Cesc might have had a bit more competition for top spot.
The only other strike that troubled the scorers was Fernando Torres's neat volley against Fulham, which was in fourth place. Although scoring the consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat is bit like finding a pound on the floor of the church during your gran's funeral.
