Lewis Hamilton wins, Kimi Raikkonen takes second in Bahrain

Rosberg had looked set to finish just behind his Mercedes team-mate until the penultimate lap, when he ran wide at Turn 1 due to an apparent braking issue and allowed the Ferrari to overtake him.

"You're never happy when you finish second...we ran out of laps, but we have to be happy after where we qualified," said Raikkonen on the podium. "I'm very happy how the team is working...the atmosphere is good now and we have a good direction to keep pushing."

Valtteri Bottas of Williams drove excellently throughout, doing well to hold off the challenge of Sebastian Vettel, who dropped down the field following a lengthy pit stop to fix damage to his car incurred when he drifted wide into gravel.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo took sixth place, although plumes of smoke came from his car just as he passed the chequered flag: a worrying sign for a team who have had repeated problems with their power units already this season.

McLaren's Jenson Button did not start the race after a dismal weekend in which he failed to record a qualifying time, and although it was thought he would start at the back of the field at the stewards' discretion, the car then suffered a technical problem.
