Selby, winner of the event in 2012, opened with a break of 133 and then had a glorious opportunity to close out the match with a 147, only to see his shot at a maximum slip away as he missed the 13th black from appeared to be a straightforward position.
It was the only slightly disappointing note on an otherwise dominant display.
"I just took my eye off it," Selby said. "I made a maximum here two years ago so I had that in my mind and perhaps I got ahead of myself."
It was not quite so easy for Judd Trump, as he was pegged back twice by Stuart Carrington before eventually securing a 6-3 victory.
A 2-0 lead for the 2011 winner was quickly erased, before a century break saw Trump back to a position of comfort at 4-2. Carrington then threatened to come back again, only for Trump to put things to bed with a closing break of 52.
Elsewhere there was a victory for Mark Allen, who beat Michael Georgiou 6-2, and Ali Carter – who saw off Daniel Wells 6-3.
Neil Robertson beat Aditya Mehta 6-2 Stephen Maguire overcame Jamie Cope 6-0 and Barry Hawkins was beaten 6-3 by Robin Hull during the evening session.
