Rain once again brought play to a premature end at the French Open after play was suspended for the day following prolonged rain on Tuesday.
Only two matches were completed on the women’s side of the draw before the rain struck, Tsvetana Pironkova stunned Agnieszka Radwanska on Suzanne-Lenglen Court while Samantha Stosur powered past Simona Halep on Court 1.
Novak Djokovic was leading Roberto Bautista Agut 3-6 6-4 4-1 on Chatrier when the rain struck their fourth-round match for a second time on Tuesday - having already been put back by almost three hours earlier in the day.
Organisers were criticised by some - including defeated second seed Radwanska - for allowing play to continue so long in the rain, with a frustrated Novak Djokovic dropping his first set of the tournament in the poor conditions.
However, there was already a backlog of matches after Monday’s washout - the first in the tournament's history - and, with only two hours play possible on Tuesday, there are still a number last-16 matches to be played, including the conclusion of Djokovic vs Bautista Agut.
With the men's and women's finals due to take place at the end of the week, questions are now being asked as to how the organisers will schedule the next few days of play with rain forecast again on Thursday after what looks likely to be a brief reprieve on Wednesday form the wet conditions that have marred the contest so far.
